PROJECT SHEET


GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BINDER PROJECT


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Students will compile an extensive research binder on the candidacy of a GOP nominee hopeful. 

REQUIRED MATERIALS:  Students will require a three ring binder, eight binder
Tabs and Computer access.  ALL MATERIAL MUST BE TYPED.

TOPIC ASSIGNMENT:  Students will be assigned a GOP nominee based on the last digit of their school ID#.

If your ID # ends in a:

Biographical Information:  A two-page biography of your candidate.  Be sure to include extensive discussion of political experience.

Articles:  Read and print out 3 articles about your candidate’s campaign  (realclearpolitics.com, cnn.com, nytimes.com, etc.)

For each article in section C, write a ½ to full page abstract that summarizes the key points of the article.

Political Platform:   Students will choose six political issues.  For each issue,  write a ½ to full page on your candidate’s position on these issues.  Be sure to include any relevant voting records.

Platform Comparison:   Write a 1-2 page essay comparing the political platform of your candidate to the political platform of Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.

Endorsement/Denouncement:  Write a two-page essay that either endorses or denounces the candidacy of your subject.   Be sure to cite specific points from their political platform.

Project Review:  Write a ½-full page reflection paper about this GOP candidate project.  What did you think of the project?

DUE DATE:   The GOP Presidential Candidate Project is due in class to Mr. Pedone on Wednesday, November 9th.   

LATE PROJECTS:  Late projects will be accepted with severe deductions.    Projects delivered on Thursday, November 10th will be penalized 20%.    Projects delivered on Monday, November 14th will be penalized at 40%.  No projects will be accepted after Monday, November 14th.

PLAGIARISM:  Student work is checked routinely for plagiarism.  If a student plagiarizes any part of the project, the project will be penalized at 50%.   Students guilty of plagiarism will also receive a citizenship grade of 3 on their report card.

PROJECT ASSISTANCE:  Students who need assistance with their GOP Candidate Project may make appointments with Mr. Pedone.  Time is available during 7th and 8th period, as well as after school.

PROJECT GRADES:   Projects will be returned with grades by  Wednesday, November 16th.    This project will account for 15% of the first semester grade.


FAQ’s:

Q:   “What happens if my candidate drops out of the race?”
A:    “Continue your project as if the candidate is still running.”

Q:   “I have candidate ___________, but I really want candidate __________. Can I switch?”
A:   “No.  Please abide by the ID# assignment system.”

Q:  “How do I know if I am plagiarizing?  What’s a bibliography?”
A:  “Mr. Pedone will give a special lesson on properly citing sources very soon.”

Q:  “Does it have to be typed?”
A:  “Yes.  We are preparing for college.  Everything must be typed and double
       spaced.  Font size should be 12 pts. (Times New Roman, Arial)”

Q:   “Can I add additional information to my binder?”
A:   “Please don’t.   You may add a cover sheet and/or spine label for ease of
       Identification.”

Q:   “What if I don’t have a binder and tabs?”
A:  “Get them.  All binders will be returned after the project.  They can be reused for
      other classes and projects.”

Q:   “Can I get an extension?”
A:  “No. Deadlines are deadlines.”
